Influences: Sin City
Somewhat unique in its style, this trailer showcases its genre conformity and uniqueness in a fast paced and engaging fashion.
The trailer for Sin City uses many of the conventional images of its genre - shot glasses, guns, cigarettes, cars, long coats, et cetera. This gives the trailer and air of familiarity to counterbalance the unique style and cinematography of the film, part of which comes from its graphic novel roots.
The style uses chiaroscuro in a black and white film with certain key images in colour. Although not something we might want to directly use in our trailer, I believe we can draw on this for inspiration in creating mood and using colour in a more effective and potentially even symbolic fashion to create a more visually powerful trailer.
Many of the influences I have chosen feature cityscapes and this trailer is no exception. The setting of the film, although fictional, is an interesting use of a city, as it is more the inner city lower income areas that are depicted, which is especially effective in the monochromatic colour scheme. This shows us that there is potentially more than one way in which to use a major city as a setting for a trailer.
The titlecard hearkens once again to the graphic novel origins of the film with the font it uses, and makes it more effective and eye-catching (essential for a film adaption) by giving it a black backdrop.
